Does cranberry help with urinary issues in my cat?

What is it?

Cranberry extract is a concentrated plant extract from the cranberry. In cat food it is added for its proanthocyanidins that can support the urinary environment.

Why does it matter?

Indoor and neutered cats more often deal with urinary sensitivity. A formula with cranberry extract can support the urinary environment as part of a total nutritional approach, alongside enough moisture and stress management.

How does it work?

Proanthocyanidins from cranberry can reduce the attachment of certain bacteria to bladder cells in the laboratory. That is shown mainly for a human E. coli strain and in vitro; how much of it reaches a cat in practice has not been established. In food it works with other ingredients that support urine pH and mineral balance. It is nutritional support, not treatment.
