Yucca schidigera

What is it?
Yucca schidigera is an extract from the root of the Mojave yucca plant. In dog and cat food it is used for its saponins and other plant compounds that can support the gut environment.
Why does it matter?
Yucca appears in some premium formulas alongside prebiotics. What it actually contributes to a dog or cat gut is, however, little studied: most yucca research concerns pigs, poultry and fish, not companion animals.
How does it work?
The effect is attributed to saponins. Direct research in dogs and cats is limited: two 1997 studies measured an effect on faecal odour, not on gut health, gas formation or nutrient uptake. A 2026 review notes that effect size varies considerably with species, dosage and study design, and that most evidence comes from controlled trials rather than real-world commercial food.

Misconceptions
Yucca is not a probiotic and does not replace a vet visit for diarrhoea or ongoing gut issues. Claims that yucca limits gas formation or supports nutrient uptake are not substantiated in dogs and cats. Treat it as an ingredient in the formula, not a treatment.
